What fiber actually delivers (and where the trade-offs are)
Fiber-to-the-home (FTTH) uses glass strands to transmit data as light pulses, which means three concrete advantages over cable: upload speeds match download speeds (symmetrical), latency typically sits under 10 milliseconds, and capacity scales further than DOCSIS cable. Multi-gig fiber tiers up to 10 Gig residential are now broadly available in fibered markets.
The trade-off isn’t about the fiber itself — it’s availability. Fiber requires running new physical infrastructure to your address, and providers prioritize neighborhoods that economically justify the buildout. Frontier, BrightSpeed, altafiber, and Kinetic are all in the middle of multi-year fiber overbuilds, but availability is street-by-street rather than uniform within a city. We confirm fiber availability at your address before quoting, so you don’t end up shopping a product you can’t get.

Is fiber really better than cable for home use?
For most use cases, yes — fiber’s symmetrical upload and lower latency are meaningful improvements. The exception is if cable is significantly cheaper at your address and your usage is download-heavy (streaming, browsing). For uploaders, gamers, and work-from-home households, fiber pulls ahead clearly.
Can my Wi-Fi router actually deliver gig speeds?
Wi-Fi 5 routers typically cap out around 500–700 Mbps wireless throughput regardless of the wired connection. Wi-Fi 6 and 6E routers can deliver close to 1 Gig wirelessly to capable devices. If you’re paying for a 1 Gig fiber plan and using a Wi-Fi 5 router, you’re leaving capacity on the table.
Does fiber require a special modem or equipment?
Fiber uses an optical network terminal (ONT) that converts the fiber signal to Ethernet — this is provided by the carrier and isn’t something you buy at retail. You connect your own router (or use a carrier-provided one) to the ONT. For multi-gig plans, your router needs a 2.5G or 10G WAN port to realize the full speed.
