Market context
What internet shopping in Long Island actually looks like
Long Island is Optimum’s home territory — Cablevision’s legacy footprint covers Nassau and Suffolk counties extensively, with the Optimum fiber overlay deployed in select neighborhoods. Frontier’s legacy copper-and-fiber footprint reaches the eastern reaches of the island and parts of Nassau.
For most Long Island addresses the practical decision is between Optimum cable (widely available, lower entry price, asymmetric upload) and Optimum fiber where fiber-eligible (multi-gig symmetrical, similar pricing). Frontier provides an alternative in the addresses where its fiber reaches.
Fiber availability
Optimum fiber is available in select Long Island neighborhoods on a building-by-building basis — not yet a comprehensive overlay. Optimum cable covers most of Nassau and Suffolk. Frontier fiber reaches parts of eastern Suffolk and pockets of Nassau.
Local FAQs
Questions specific to Long Island
Is Optimum fiber actually different from Optimum cable?
Yes — they’re physically separate networks. Optimum cable runs over coaxial DOCSIS and tops out around 1 Gig with much lower upload. Optimum fiber is XGS-PON with symmetrical multi-gig speeds. If your address is fiber-eligible, the fiber product is meaningfully better.
What’s the actual upload speed I’ll get on Optimum cable?
Optimum cable upload typically maxes out at 35–50 Mbps depending on the plan tier. If you do significant video uploads, large file transfers, or run a home server, fiber (where available) is a meaningfully better fit.
Why is there no Verizon Fios on this list?
Verizon Fios serves Long Island but isn’t in our authorized provider lineup. We won’t pretend Verizon doesn’t exist as an option — but we represent Optimum and Frontier and can speak honestly to those products.
