In context
BrightSpeed’s overbuild of CenturyLink legacy territory
BrightSpeed acquired Lumen’s 20-state copper-and-fiber footprint in 2022 and committed to a multi-billion-dollar fiber buildout across the territory. The company’s explicit strategy is to overbuild the legacy CenturyLink DSL plant with XGS-PON fiber, particularly in mid-tier metros that hadn’t seen recent fiber investment.
The buildout is real and ongoing — millions of addresses have been converted, with millions more scheduled. As with Frontier, the consumer experience varies dramatically by address: fibered locations get modern symmetrical service with simple terms; non-fibered locations may still see legacy DSL pricing that doesn’t represent BrightSpeed’s current product. We confirm before quoting.
Common questions
FAQs
Is BrightSpeed the same as CenturyLink?
No — BrightSpeed acquired CenturyLink’s legacy 20-state ILEC territory from Lumen in 2022 and operates as a separate company. Service in those states is now BrightSpeed; CenturyLink (now Quantum Fiber) operates in the territory it retained.
When will BrightSpeed Fiber reach my address?
BrightSpeed publishes buildout schedules quarterly. We can run your address against the current map and tell you whether fiber is live, in active build, or not yet scheduled. If you’re still on DSL we’ll be honest about that rather than steering you toward a service you can’t actually get.
Does BrightSpeed require a contract or AutoPay?
No annual contract is required. AutoPay is optional rather than mandatory for the advertised rate, which is unusual in this category.
